10 / THE IDEA

Stillness, reflected in water.

The Shiva Temple proposal begins with a powerful setting: a place of worship rising from water. The journey across the lake becomes part of the experience, creating a transition from everyday movement to a quieter state of attention.

The concept imagines a temple within a lake: an island prayer space connected by a bridge, with surrounding community facilities allowing the temple itself to remain focused on worship.

Its architectural references explore two related ideas: the familiar upward movement of a shikhara and the light, floating quality of a diya. Fragmented planes, curved structural elements, reflected light and water give those ideas a contemporary expression.

The approach

The journey is part of the place.

A temple within a lake changes the nature of arrival. Distance, water and the crossing create a pause before the visitor reaches the prayer space. That simple sequence gives the setting much of its character.

The proposal treats the surrounding landscape as part of the experience. The temple can be seen from different points, reflected in the water and encountered gradually as a person moves towards it.

Architectural language

A familiar form, reconsidered.

The project material studies the shikhara as a sequence of planes rather than a single heavy volume. Gaps between elements allow light and ventilation to play a part in how the structure is perceived.

Other references draw on the diya and on curved forms associated with the story of the Ganga in Shiva’s hair. These are design explorations within the project vision, bringing cultural meaning into the spatial and structural discussion.

A shared place

Room for worship. Room for quiet.

The intention is to create a place that can hold both collective occasions and individual reflection. A temple has to accommodate very different rhythms: the energy of a festival and the stillness of an ordinary visit.

The conceptual programme keeps the central space dedicated to worship, with the wider campus supporting community activities. The architectural studies give that vision a form, exploring how light, landscape and worship can come together.

The ambition

A place that asks for a little less hurry, and a little more attention.
